Help Topic: Abstract Category (Structural Category)

An Abstract Category is a taxonomy node used for structure and reuse, not for creating products.

Abstract categories answer: “What broad type of thing is this?” without committing to a single stable product template. Examples: Pipe, Valve, Medical Equipment, Electrical Equipment, Fasteners.

What Abstract Categories are used for

  • Navigation and grouping: they make the taxonomy readable and help users (and AI) drill down to the right product-level class.
  • Reusable building blocks for experts: you can maintain common attribute groups or guidance that many child categories reuse (e.g., “Compliance”, “Operating Conditions”, “Documentation expectations”).
  • Governance scope: you can attach experts/stewards at a higher level and inherit their scope down the tree.

This mirrors how global classification systems work: higher hierarchy levels mainly help you find the correct lowest-level class, while the lowest level is where the detailed attribute description belongs.

What Abstract Categories are NOT

  • Not product creation points: you normally do not create canonical products in abstract categories.
  • Not identity definitions: identity rules are defined where products are actually created (product-level categories).
  • Not “everything buckets”: they should organize meaningfully, not become catch-alls.

Universal Categories are a subset of Abstract Categories

A Universal Category (e.g., “Medical Equipment”, “Electrical Equipment”) is simply an abstract category at a very high, domain level. Your plan to generate an extended list of universal categories (with AI) is a good strategy: experts can use them as domain building blocks and attach shared attribute groups and governance at those levels.

How Abstract Categories relate to Product-Level Categories

  • Abstract categories typically have children that are either:

    • more specific abstract categories, or
    • product-level categories (leaf nodes where products are created).

  • Example path: Universal (abstract): Medical Equipment → Abstract: Imaging Equipment → Product-level: MRI Tomograph.

Note on the word “Concrete”

In Actualog discussions, “concrete category” sometimes means “a specific topic like Pipe,” but technically Pipe may still be abstract if you do not create products there. The reliable classification is: Abstract (structural) vs Product-level.
